Helping those who can't access mental health due to costs and financial strain
Hi, this is Kim Douglas, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor and owner of Elephant in the Room Counseling. A billboard I saw a while ago stated: “Depression, if left untreated, can lead to death.”
That really hit me. What they were referring to, of course, is suicide. Many clients tell me they feel like a burden to others, or they feel hopeless about the future. These are warning “words and/or phrases” we listen for, that indicate “suicidal ideation” is occurring, and this person needs to have more therapy, not less. But sadly, clients, not just for my practice, but for other professionals too, feel they can’t afford to continue their therapy due to cost and/or poor insurance coverage. But it's not just depression that goes untreated, it's many other diagnoses.
So, how can YOU help? Here’s how!
I’m very proud to introduce:
The Love, Lori Mental Health Counseling Fund.
I lost my older sister, Lori, (pictured left) over 19 years ago to a prescription pain pill drug addiction. I left a comfortable career to go back to school and become a Mental Health Counselor to help understand her struggle and her addiction….and just over 4 years ago, I realized a dream of opening my own practice, “Elephant in the Room Counseling”. I share my sister’s story with clients when it’s relevant to their struggle. I emphasize with people the importance of talking about substance abuse and mental health and how they go hand in hand, but I never quite found a way to bring Lori all the way into my practice. Until now. With the development of this fund in her name, and what it represents, there can be help for those struggling and suffering with mental health disease.
My sister had a heart of gold. She was a mother, a wife, a professor, a friend, a daughter, a sister, and more when she shockingly left us at age 41. She would have given her last dollar and not complained for a minute if she knew it would help you. She honestly was the most beautiful soul I ever knew. So, the new fund is something she would be very proud to be Headlining.
In the short time I’ve owned my business, I’ve experienced clients who cannot afford to pay their bills, clients who didn’t know their deductibles would be so high, clients who had to stop coming to therapy because they couldn’t afford it, and unfortunately, many clients who just didn’t pay.
If Mental Health has touched you, your life, or someone you know in any way, please consider a donation to The Love, Lori Mental Health Counseling Fund. Your donation is used strictly to help clients of Elephant in the Room Counseling when it’s become too much for them to afford.
The World Health Organization has declared depression to be the number one cause of shortened life due to a disability.
Many people are not receiving the treatment they deserve. Lack of access and/or financial ability are driving many people away from getting the care they need. You can make a difference by donating today.
**Donors, please note this is not a tax-deductible donation and the donations are used only for clients of Elephant in the Room Counseling.
Your support and contributions will help clients continue their therapeutic journey, help clients feel hopeful about not having to stop their mental health progress due to financial strain. It will help improve their self-esteem, improve depression and anxiety symptoms, work through their PTSD, and many other diagnoses
